Fortunately the TSM node Benjamin is only looking at a single file space, so the output is relatively simple. If, however, we query the file spaces for node "SAPD01", we get two stanzas:

     NODE_NAME: SAPD01
FILESPACE_NAME: /opt/oracle/data
FILESPACE_TYPE: jfs
      CAPACITY: 1328554.9
      PCT_UTIL: 93.1
  BACKUP_START: 2002-12-23 08:00:00.000000
    BACKUP_END:

     NODE_NAME: SAPD01
FILESPACE_NAME: /usr
FILESPACE_TYPE: jfs
      CAPACITY: 23452.4
      PCT_UTIL: 43.5
  BACKUP_START: 2002-12-24 02:00:01.000000
    BACKUP_END:

This might be useful, but we don't have to stop here. SQL can i.e. sum up information it gathers from a query. So we can look at the file spaces of our node as a whole:

select sum(capacity) from filespaces where node_name='SAPD01'

This query will check all entries in the "filespaces" table and, if the node_name equals SAPD01, will sum up all entries it finds in the field named "capacity". The output will look like:

                       Unnamed[1]
---------------------------------
                        1352007.3

Unfortunately SQL is not creative enough to find a proper description for the output and chooses the default name "Unnamed[1]". We can override this Description by providing a name for the result field using the "as" SQL clause. (TSM will allow you to omit the "as" clause, in this tutorial, however, we always use "as" for better reading.)

Note: The "-" character can be used to split up a command into more than one lines. The "-" character is not supported when using the Command line in the TSM Web interface. If you are using the Web interface, type the select query in a single line, omitting the "-" character.

select sum(capacity) as "Sum of all Fears for SAPD01 in MB" -
from filespaces where node_name='SAPD01'

will result in:

Sum of all Fears for SAPD01 in MB
---------------------------------
                        1352007.3
